BOOK TO SCREEN POST!
DH Lawrence’s 1928 novel directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (Netflix 2022).
Sometimes a book is as known for its cultural significance as much as the story it tells. Lady Chatterley's Lover is a novel about an aristocratic woman who craves physical intimacy and leaves her husband for the groundskeeper. It was scandalous because of the graphic descriptions of a woman enjoying sex, and for the mixing of classes. Although Lady Chatterley's Lover was written in 1928, it was banned, and not available until the sixties. Once it was available, it sold 3 million copies and became a part of the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s. Why I'm mentioning this is because I found the film had a very late sixties feel at times. Particularly when Lady Chatterley and her lover are galavanting naked in nature. They might as well be heading to Woodstock when they put their clothes back on. One of the main themes of Lawrence's book is the contrast between the beauty of the natural world with the dark void of industrialization. Another aspect that would have appealed to the 60s back-to-the-land sensibility. So I thought that was exceedingly clever.
Lady Chatterley in Lawrence's book often opines that she does not have the skinny androgynous body that is à la mode. So I found it rather funny that Emma Corrin was cast, when they have exactly this type of body. And, indeed, one of the main delights of the film is looking at their angular boyish body in all sorts of nude poses. They play a different Lady Chatterley than the one I imagined.
However, that is where a book like this will always be better than the movie, or more complex than a movie. Lawrence's work is just more considered and contradictory when it comes to character descriptions and motives. Lady Chatterley is much more of a mystery to be solved. And she tries her best to come to know herself.
Nonetheless, the best film adaptation of the book I've seen.
