This is about accountability. If someone doesn’t know they haven’t been taught. “Community is a verb.” Has been a pillar for me to take an active stance towards instead of seeing “the community” as a noun: an object. I don’t mean to diminish the macro level factors that lead to segregated cyphers. Some times we just need to gather and connect where there is energetic reciprocity. We all need and deserve that some times. But I am saying that energetic reciprocity is a teachable concept. We learn as kids not to interrupt ongoing conversations. But to my knowledge I don’t know of anyone really teaching on cypher etiquette. If you are in the know enough to complain about it than you have a responsibility to use that Knowledge to do something about it. And it doesn’t have to be a class. The club is where learning happens. Small ways. I’ve been struck and shaped by moments as simple “Hold on they are having a conversation” or “Pay attention to how so and so listens to the energy of a cypher” it’s tempting to lord your knowledge of how it was/could be to scratch that itch for power. There is a dopamine release connected to complaining. I have spent too long trapped in that loop. But We only stand to gain from putting energy into helping our community. It’s about taking accountability for the state of your community and keeping an active imagination as to all the ways that can look.
