“Binary Explosive (Queensland, 2018)” This series depicts gender reveal explosions that have made the news for having “gone wrong” by causing injury, death, property damage and environmental destruction. Tannerite, a brand of explosive originally created for target practice shooting, is the de facto provider for gender reveal parties. Tannerite is classified as a “binary explosive”, meaning that it consist of two separate chemicals which on their own are non-combustible, but when combined, become explosive. This makes it easy for Tannerite to be sold in two separate non-combustible parts, thereby evading the regulations that otherwise limit the sale of explosives in the U.S. and beyond.
