"The doctors told me that strawberry marks were common, that one in 20 babies have them. Although this felt reassuring, in the early days, I'd find myself searching around town and in supermarkets, looking for another baby that looked like Lola.
"I also scrolled through Google and Instagram, searching for answers - for someone else who had been through what I was going through, and could offer advice and reassurance.
"I was surprised at how little was out there - to the point where I thought I'd got the name of her condition wrong.
"Eventually, I decided to be the representation I was looking for. I set up @thelifeoflola___ and created a #ShowOffYourStrawberry hashtag. My Instagram page started to grow into a community of positivity and support. The people I've connected with are from all over the world. It's helped me as much as it's helped others.
"Now, when I'm out and about, I know that Lola looks different to other babies. But when I get home, and open up Instagram, I’m part of this group who understands, I’m in a community of people and we’re all the same.
"Unfortunately, having a large following on social media has meant that I've had a few trolls. When Lola's birthmark was more prominent, I had comments saying that I'd hit her, or that it was a tumour and not a birthmark. I even got comments like "she's not beautiful."
"Through lack of understanding, ignorance can emerge. It's why representation is so important. The more people see visible differences in the media, on tv or in advertising, the less they’ll stare or behave negatively towards people who look different.
"For parents anxious about their child's birthmark: trust your instincts. If you’re starting to worry, keep asking for second opinions. Finding a community will help – parents are always willing to support one another, and many will have been through similar situations to you.
"Also, reach out to Changing Faces if you need support. It’s exhausting dealing with other people’s reactions to your child’s visible difference, and staring or rude comments can get you down."
