This week’s #SundaySpotlight is a Baroque bonanza looking at instruments of the 17th century ✨
Did you know Baroque string instruments are traditionally strung with gut (called catgut, but really from sheep 🐑). These give a more mellow, less strident tone quality.
The lute (Baroque guitar) frequently came to symbolise love and romance, lust and lasciviousness. Its delicate and fleeting sounds also reflected love's transience♥
The sackbut (which developed into the modern trombone) comes from French — from the verbs saquer and bouter, which mean push and pull, which is literally what you do with the slide🎵
