I have always wondered where the Sottsass and Memphis ceramic wares were made. The technical difficulty and absolute precision has always amazed me in it’s almost impossibleness of geometric lines for clay.
To discover and find that one small studio in Tuscany have been and continue to produce these pieces alongside a long list of recognisable projects for some of the biggest brands is unbelievable. Hand thrown Fornasetti pots, hand painted surfaces and the merge of casting with hand building.
Most production studios only ever use one or two glazes and techniques. Going through the archives of @bitossi_ceramiche you can see the rich history and varied surfaces and techniques that set them apart from any production studio I have visited. It is so incredible inspiring to see production studios finding the balance of production and creative development.
Making their own clay, their own glazes, even their own ceramic school to push the boundaries of ceramic production. Talk about the unknown crafts people. Thank you Bitossi for the inspiring tour.
