#TheSocialDilemma demonstrated how social media constructs how we see reality. As Russia invades Ukraine, part of what’s at stake is an information war, and which also becomes a war to control the LANGUAGE we use to describe reality. That's why Aza Raskin and I interviewed UC San Diego linguist Lera Boroditsky for our #YourUndividedAttention podcast to become aware of how LANGUAGE shapes our REALITY. -- Is the situation in Ukraine a "Russian invasion", or in Putin's words, a "de-militarization and de-Nazification" peace-keeping mission? -- People love to buy "pre-owned cars" (good), but who wants a "used car" (bad)? -- Is YouTube "censoring free speech" (bad), or just changing "what gets amplified" (neutral)? -- Is Google "surveilling and tracking" us (bad), or "personalizing information" (good)? -- In polling, people view "vaccine passports" as authoritarian power grabs (bad), but are much less worried about "vaccine verification" (neutral). What happens when the underlying events and phenomena are the same, but we use different language to describe it? Is there a difference? What if the person hearing the language doesn't notice when specific language 'frames' are used to persuade them? In invisible ways, language constructs how we see the world.
