Thank you @wmag @dariasimoneharper I’m speechless! I must give some background on how much this image means to me below.. I first stepped foot on Havens beach in 2014 when my boyfriend James told me about his late mother, artist Melinda Camber Porter, taking a 5 minute walk to Havens from their home every day in sag Harbor to spend the day on the beach to paint and write. Her paintings inspired me to go to art school. I emulated her steps and made paintings that summer at havens and i was the only person there most of the time in the midst of the July frenzy of the Hamptons. I felt i had found a hidden gem. I used the bay water and sand in my paintings—encrusted watercolors of imagined ancestors I did not know, convening on the beach, wanting to show the rest of the world this special place. James’ father Joe hung my paintings in the Sag house to compliment Melinda’s masterpieces. Little did i know at that time how pivotal this would be for me and my future, all because of a worldly and accepting couple who raised my soulmate :) It makes sense they chose Sag Harbor to spend the rest of their lives, as it’s history boasts with inspiration, acceptance, and a colliding of cultures. Now that I know and am involved with the history and community of SANS and Eastville, I am able to continue this story of friendship and love that exudes from the kissing waters and the sweet whispers of the trees. I wish Joe and Melinda could see this, and on the way to Eastville Museum around the corner I walk past Melinda’s tree, give it a nod, bask in its shade, and ask if she is proud! Thank you @jamesflicek for changing my life. I’m grateful to this family for welcoming me here so that I could welcome others and create new history in one of the most historic Black & Indigenous beach towns in the country. I look forward to many more summers with my beautiful blended family and friends. Linking the past with the present. Superposition. Look what we’ve done! 🌾🥀🌾🌻🌾 Plaque Inscription at the Base of October Glory Tree on Ackerly St in Sag Harbor #MelindaCamberPorter Says to Us YOU WALK WHERE I WALKED 2009
