This one really touched me. It hits different coming from your own family. I come from a very racially blended family because *most* of the Black men in my family do not date women at my color or darker. Even though many would still consider me lighter skinned.

Even in my household as the only Black person, it was always communicated very clearly that Blackness is undesirable. I do remember thinking growing up that it’s sad how many Black men see dating non-melanated women as a sign of progress or achievement. I knew from a very young age that I wanted an unideniably Black family. That Blackness was not something I was trying to escape or minimize or neutralize.
