There is a kind of work that begins as a whisper and swells to a chorus. In this work, an individual invites herself to be overtaken and overcome by a collective. And the work that ensues is bolder, more complex, and more resonant than anything that could be realized alone. This past week, the artist Cecilia Vicuña described this phenomena just before her reverberative evening performance, “Extermination Living Quipu,” explaining that “sound will make sound.” And it did. Literal sticks and stones in the hand, and individual voices begot other voices and percussion until the rotunda in the Guggenheim was full.
Last fall, the poet and performer Caroline Bergvall stood at the edge of the North Sea at the Turner Contemporary at Margate for a work that began as a whisper and swelled to a contrapuntal chorus of language in migration. The Rivers-commissioned algorithmic poem is available on the Rivers web platform, where we also screen Bergvall’s full performance every evening at sundown.
Rivers holds a special commitment to practices that begin as a whisper. We recognize our own practice as a quiet voice that joins others, through deep partnership, to make loud, vibrational art. We also hold a special commitment to poet-artists who use their voice...and a few stones held in the hand.
