Huge breakthrough: US leader @RepRaskin is pushing a new national anti-SLAPP law to stop oil companies like @Chevron from abusing the legal system to harass and intimidate climate advocates like me and environmental groups like @Greenpeace. Jamie is a constitutional law expert and former Dean of the Washington College of Law so he knows what he is talking about on issues of Free Speech. He is also a US Congressman who led the second impeachment investigation of Trump. About 30 of the 50 US states have such a law (although not New York where I live) but there is no federal law covering the entire country. By the way, SLAPP lawsuits are filed not to press real legal claims on the merits but to intimidate and harass the other side. They are considered violations of Free Speech rights and often are brought by fossil fuel companies to try to silence protestors. Chevron's 12-year legal assault on me in US courts after I helped Amazon communities in Ecuador win a large pollution case against the company is considered by many to be the mother of all SLAPP attacks. This law must pass so let's get behind it. It will help protect all advocates in the US who are fighting to save the planet and will provide the impetus for other countries to follow.
