We narrowly escaped a freeze this weekend. Temperatures were only supposed to be in around 44 degrees but we woke up to 35. The back field is always colder but we didn't see any signs of frost fortunately.
Although we allowed our water times to stay as the summer, this clearly was an indication to now shift to fall schedule, especially since rain has finally come. We had 200 visitors this weekend for our "Open Day" and so many remarked about how despite the drought and high heat our leaves looks so green and perfect. So while flower production is low this year due to the climate, we know that our tubers are having a fantastic season.
Even with lower flower production, seeing the faces of people when they see ten acres of dahlias is a wonderful feeling for us. People are also surprised that we don't stake our dahlias and they stand stick straight. If you are interested in learning how we grow as well as our recommendations for your dahlia growing, we still have space in our half day dahlia workshop on Saturday, Oct. 1. Please join us.
