Recharging my social battery!
We tell our kids to limit screen time, but no one really teaches adults how to do the same. I see this all the time in my work. Endless scrolling gives quick hits of dopamine, but it rarely restores energy, focus, or mood in a lasting way.
Neuroscience shows that healthy dopamine comes from novelty and interruption, not passive consumption. Small breaks in routine activate the brain systems tied to motivation and curiosity, while scrolling does not have the same restorative effect.
A spa day is one way to interrupt routine, but it is not the point. The principle matters more than the place.
Healthy dopamine comes from breaking predictability-it can be five minutes outside without your phone, taking a different route home, or having a real conversation instead of another scroll. Try it! And you can get ways to restore, rest, in my book, Practical Optimism. Rest and productivity aren’t mutually exclusive. #optimism #practicaloptimism #doctorsuevarma #gurneys #gurneysmontauk
