One of my favourite graphic novels from 2021 was translated into English this week! Originally published in French by Le pastèque in Quebec, it also won the GG in the French category. I’m excited to share this with you because Gerard Dubois’s illustrations are so captivating and I’m sure you’ll agree. Mila and her family are in an unnamed country at war. Her parents try to stick it out before they join the never ending line of people leaving. Her uncle, a clown, is shot, and soon after bombs start to drop. This is the final straw, her parents pack them each a suitcase. There are pages where Mila is with all the stray cats that people have left behind, and they are wonderful. She is an adult now, remembering that time and what it was like.
