I’ll be honest when I say that I didn’t have a CLUE what to eat when I started my gut healing journey. Up until then, all I really cared about was lifting weights and hitting my macros. I had a very “bro” mindset when it came to health 😅 And because I was physically very lean and muscular, I always thought I knew everything there was to know about health. Lol yeah, definitely not the case. 😂 My diet basically consisted of like 5 foods... Eggs, chicken, beef, white rice, and avocado 🥑 I mean.. it’s not the worst diet, but the thing I didn’t realize was that I was completely starving all the good bacteria in my gut that was SO important to my health. Yeah I was shredded, but my immune system was pathetic. If a cold or flu was going around, I was guaranteed to get it. I always felt like I needed to take naps, and regularly had a hard time making it through the day. But once I realized just how important your gut microbiome is for feeling optimal... it changed the whole way I viewed food. Nowadays when I go into the grocery store, there’s one main question that crosses my mind: “What new prebiotics can I incorporate this week that will help increase the diversity & richness of my gut microbiome?” And for those of you who aren’t familiar with those terms... here’s a crash course: Gut microbiome - the ecosystem of bacteria & organisms in your gut Probiotics - supplements or foods that contain live bacteria Prebiotics - the food that those bacteria feed on to grow and become more diverse The thing is, we WANT a diversity of bacteria in our gut - and you only get that when you feed them a diversity of different prebiotic fibers. Most of these prebiotics come from plants, and your goal should be to work up to about 20-30 different plants each week! This is the cornerstone of truly feeling optimal. You can’t have optimal energy without having optimal GUT HEALTH.
