This is another powerful model of what reparations looks like! It’s not to be feared, but embraced. What an incredible victory for the Onondaga Nation and a step in the right direction in our fight for environmental justice.
The 1000+ acres of ancestral land is “one of the largest returns of land to an Indigenous Nation by a state.” New York will tap into the Onondaga Nation’s expertise and cultural wisdom to preserve, protect, and sustain wildlife and habitat. This land is home to acres of forest and fields, and various animals such as songbirds, the great blue heron, hawks, bald eagles, white-tailed deer, and more. Onondaga Nation Chief Tadodaho Sidney Hill said that now, the Nation can “restore these lands and waters and to preserve them for the future generations yet to come.”
Let’s replicate models like this to accelerate a sustainable and equitable world for people and our planet!
