Artists Sun Guoqi and Zhang Hongzan began their careers during the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) in China. In their oil painting, ‘Divert Water from the Milky Way Down’ (1974), men and women are shown working in a snowy landscape to build an aqueduct. Flushed from exertion, the workers smile as they lean forward to move a section of the structure. The cold conditions and the warm passion contrast in this painting. Such portrayals of people working together are typical of the mainstream artistic output produced during this period in China. At almost the same time, the artist Zhang Wei painted ‘Fusuijing Building’ (1975). Smaller in scale and rendered in a different style to ‘Divert Water...’, the colours suggest a dark, private interior and a light-filled exterior. Zhang intended to contrast the warmth of the apartment with the cool harshness of the political reality outside.
