What an honor to illustrate these powerful stories from West Texans seeking abortion access — and an incredible collaboration with my favorite reporter @skortlandia Listen to these gut-punching stories from @marfapublicradio (each is only 5 mins long) “In the wake of the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, people seeking abortions around the U.S. are finding themselves forced to travel long distances to access that care. But here in Far West Texas, that’s been the reality for years. As the healthcare challenges in our region become a model for much of the country, we’re sharing a special series called “So Far From Care.” This week, we’ll hear the stories of three West Texans who tell us in their own words about their journeys to access abortion: 12 years ago, 6 years ago, and this past year. —> Today, we’re starting off the series with a story from Marfa resident JD DiFabbio, who traveled to El Paso to get an abortion in 2010. —> When Isabel moved to Marathon, Far West Texas seemed like a beautiful paradise, the spotty cell service a charming feature of rural life. But in 2016, when the cost of travel kept her from a follow-up appointment after her abortion, she found herself facing a rare medical emergency that demonstrated the high stakes of living in a remote community. —> The journey Sara took to get that care is one that will soon become familiar to people seeking abortions throughout much of the South. As New Mexico becomes the only state bordering Texas that hasn’t restricted abortion, residents of the Big Bend region suddenly find ourselves among the closest to care in the state.”
