pro•test// a statement or action expressing disapproval of or objection to something. I disapprove. Of racism, of hatred, of our sitting president - I vehemently object. A couple weeks ago, I marched down Broadway with tens of thousands, shouting for my Black friends’ lives to be valued, respected, heard, & MATTER. The air was heavy with rain & thick with emotion, raw voices leading the masses with strength & in peace. Chants for change - for JUSTICE - rippled, matching the beat of marching steps & pounding hearts. This weekend, Trump came to my hometown - Tulsa, OK - for his first rally post COVID-19. Initially scheduled for Juneteenth in downtown Tulsa until public outcry pushed it a day, the rally took place mere blocks from the Greenwood district of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. I went to a conservative Christian school in Tulsa & took an entire year of OK history. I was taught of the Land Run, but didn’t learn about Black Wall Street & the devastation that occurred until COLLEGE. I scrolled through social media feeds last night & saw members of my parents’ church, relationships from this Christian school attending this rally.. & my heart broke. I am angry. I am angry for justice that still has not been served for Breonna Taylor & angry for my Black friends who do not feel safe in their. own. country. I am angry that Trump stood in my hometown & called COVID-19 the “Kung Flu”, normalizing & perpetuating racism that mocks my Chinese friends.. my Chinese SISTERS. I protest. If we truly believe the Imago Dei, the literal “image of God” in each human soul, then to be “pro-life” means to fight for systems that protect life beyond just birth. It matters now. This is not a “why did you have to get political conversation” - this is humanity. This is not a “thoughts & prayers for peace” kind of post - this is votes & action for CHANGE. It’s time to flip tables & love our neighbor as ourself. It’s time to stand for justice & call out racism for what it is: hate. We are living history & we write this story. We define who we are & what we will stand for - for ourselves, for our children, for our country. I hope we stand for justice. #blacklivesmatter
