“A date which will live in infamy.” On Dec. 7, 1941, America was pulled into the second World War in an unprovoked attack by Japan on Pearl Harbor. At 0645 that Sunday morning, the USS Ward fired on a Japanese submarine near Pearl Harbor. Believing it to be an isolated incident, the US Pacific Fleet awaited confirmation of the engagement with the sub. By then, Japanese aircraft were already in flight, launching 275 miles away from their target. The attack saw more than 350 Japanese aircraft attack Pearl Harbor. 2,335 Americans were killed in the attack. 2,008 were Navy personnel, 218 were members of the US Army, and 109 were Marines. The Army and Navy lost 188 aircraft, and 159 more aircraft were damaged. Three American ships were destroyed beyond repair, with 16 more left damaged. This was one of the most pivotal moments in American history. We keep that history alive by remembering the courage and sacrifice of those who were fought back that day and every day after.
