PAUL P. @paulp_doe_ye_nexte_thynge opens: Vespertilians 16 September – 30 October 2022 he will be present on the preview day: Friday 16 September 2022 4 – 7 pm at STUDIO M Rochelle School 7 Playground Gardens London E2 7HU Paul P.'s Vespertilians takes its origin from a reference to the symbolist poet Comte Robert de Montesquiou who adopted ‘the nocturnal bird’ 🦇as an emblem of his rarefied self, an esoteric symbol of his homosexuality in an era of criminalised desire. We are showing landscape paintings alongside closely cropped portraits in both oil paint and watercolour of men appropriated from gay erotic magazines (including the ArQuives (formerly known as the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives)) published from the 1960s to the early 80s. Paul P. considers and commemorates queer social histories, particularly the period bracketed by the gay liberation that occurred just after Stonewall and just before the onset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s.
