#BlackHistoryMonth - The United States Federal Courthouse in Miami, Florida was named in honor of Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr., the First African-American to be appointed to the Florida Third District Court of Appeal and the Dade County Circuit Court. Mr. Ferguson was also elevated to United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida in 1993 by President Bill Clinton.
As a lawyer, he was appointed to a presidential panel that investigated the 1968 Liberty City riots. As a trial judge, he made a landmark ruling prohibiting the systematic exclusion of blacks from juries. The ruling led to important appellate decisions recognizing the impropriety of discrimination in the court system. While serving as a United States District Court judge, he rendered decisions that led to substantial increases in funding and services for disabled Floridians.
After his death in 2003, the United States Federal Courthouse in downtown Miami, designed by Arquitectonica, as well as the nearby Metromover station, were named and dedicated in his honor. The Florida Black Lawyers Association also voted unanimously to rename itself the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association.
