“The permeability of the knits mimics the incompleteness of all language as expression—the way in which a system of representation can never wholly articulate the “thing” itself.” - Evan Lincoln (@evanlinc) for @artforum, August 2023.
“Each conceptually driven work features a finely knit panel emblazoned with individual words or phrases, stretched around a wooden frame…Tonal variations permit his “statements” to either glow in brilliant contrast to their mesh-like supports or softly murmur to the viewer.” Lincoln continued.
The artist, writer and designer is inspired by artists like William Blake, Renée Green and Adrian Piper who prioritize language over formalism. Jonathan Anderson, who hosted Carroll’s first solo presentation in Europe last year highlighted how the artist “subverts the notion of conventional categories, whether in gender, materials, or forms of craft, allows him to excavate new spaces from which to perceive creative actions.”
Patrick Carroll’s ‘Going Astray’, 2025 is included in ‘Attrition’, on view now by appointment in lower Manhattan.
