When I started my Snail Mail Club, I thought the hardest part would be designing all the cute stationery and letters... but turns out, the real challenge was ensuring the letter met postal guidelines. Even if your envelope is under one ounce, if it’s too puffy, uneven, or lumpy (think: wax seals, buttons, or layered paper), it can’t glide through the postal sorting machines. That makes it non-machinable, which means it needs an extra surcharge or a special ‘non-machinable’ stamp. In the future, I won’t eliminate puffy letters completely because let’s be honest, they’re part of the charm. At least now I know how to prep them properly so they reach their destination safe and sound. It’s all part of the learning curve of running a little mail club!
