Listen to this premise. A group of women are kept imprisoned in a basement cell. One day the guards all disappear and they escape from the cell, only to find themselves on another planet, with no other inhabitants. The youngest of the group narrates the tale, knowing she will eventually be all alone in this world one day. I have such an odd relationship with this book! I read it many many years ago in French. I looked everywhere for my original copy, because I liked the cover (the reason, along with the title, I bought it.) I concluded that I must have gotten rid of it. But that didn't surprise me. I thought the book was too disturbing and troubling to keep at the time. I cried for an hour after reading the book. And somehow felt the loneliness of the narrator too intimately. I was bereft on that planet. I didn't know anyone else who had read it at the time. But now I keep meeting booksellers who say it is one of their favourite books and recommend it to everyone. And, booksellers are generally the best readers out there. And they shrug and say it is not that disturbing. Anyhow, it's fascinating to me how books can strike such different chords in different readers. If you've read this book, I'd love to know your opinion! . . . #bookstagram #bookreview #igreads #booklover #bookworm #bookrecommendations #iwhohaveneverknownmen
