Black history and present continue to grace The Great White Way. #LenaHorne via @npr・The former Brooks Atkinson Theatre was renamed after Lena Horne, the iconic Brooklyn actress, singer and civil rights activist who died in 2010, according to the city of New York. The new marquee was unveiled in front of a crowd on Nov. 1. Horne is the first Black woman to have a Broadway theater named for her. A report by the Nederlander Organization states that the owner and operator of the theater embarked on a mission to rename the building in honor of a Black theater luminary during the summer of 2020.
