Eames Legacy (Part 1): The Closing of 901
The industrious walls of 901 served as home to the #Eames Office for four decades. Through the years, 901 quickly filled with the results of Charles and Ray's work: collected items, materials, experiments and prototypes of the projects themselves, as well as their film and photo recordings.
When Ray died on August 21, 1988, the Eames family set out to safeguard the contents of 901. Realizing the help of strong institutional partners who could ensure the proper archiving and the ongoing use of the material for research, educational and cultural projects was vital.
The 1988 film "901 – After 45 Years of Working" by Eames Demetrios gives an impression of the herculean task of clearing such a momentous design studio and workshop that for decades was home to two extremely productive creatives and their team of up to three dozen designers, model makers, researchers, and assistants.
