The Battle of Chosin Reservoir lasted from Nov. 27 to Dec. 13, 1950. For actions in the long days in which an estimated 120,000 Chinese 9th Army forces surrounded roughly 30,000 United Nations Command forces, 17 Medals of Honor and 78 Service Cross Medals were awarded. That’s the second-highest number of such awards given for actions in one battle, following those awarded for actions in the Battle of the Bulge. Many war historians believe the Chosin Campaign to have been the most brutal in modern warfare because of the intense close combat, the intensity of the sustained violence, the casualty rate, and the endurance of all fighting forces in such unforgiving weather conditions.
