The first time I ever spent significant time in Burke, Vermont, a number of locals said to me: Go and drive Darling Hill Road... I followed their instructions and what a treat I was in store for - one of the most beautiful roads and hilltops
in the Northeast Kingdom, if not the whole state of Vermont.
š¾ The road and most of the surrounding land all was owned by NYC hotelier Elmer Darling who owned 1,400 acres in town and built the mansion thatās now @theinnatburklyn in 1904 on the highest ridge of the road where these shots were taken. He had a Morgan horse farm on the road, along with farms to supply meat and dairy to his NYC hotel. Be sure to look for a cute herd of cows who still live on the road!
š« The road just outside of town is paved and quickly turns to dirt. Thereās a beautiful section of road thatās lined with maples that shouldnāt be missed. The road now is home is many private residences with epic views, farm properties and historic barns, along with the Inn at Burklyn, @innatmountainviewfarm and @wildflowerinn_restaurant. Itās also where you can find the bike shop for @kingdomtrails and access the trails.
š Heavenās Bench is one of the best perches for the mountain views in all directions on Darling Hill. The road is stunning in the winter, but just imagine it in the height of peak foliage in the fall...
ā ļø Remember when visiting any off-the-beaten path road in Vermont to be respectful of private homes and property and only park in designated public areas. Drive the speed limit and take in the epic views, the fresh air, and the beauty that surrounds. Keep an eye out as you may just catch a glimpse of a š« on this route...
Have you traveled Darling Hill Road? Whatās a Vermont road you think is one of the most scenic?
