On my birthday today 17 September ✨ - thinking about three significant people who have rocked my world and always inspired and intrigued me with their talent, originality and vision. First: Elsa Schiaparelli born 10 September 1890 in Rome, Italy and a fellow Virgo. Pictured here as photographed by Man Ray (another Virgo) in 1933. Her creations often in collaboration with the Surrealists in particular Dali but also Jean Cocteau and Man Ray are currently on view in Paris in ‘Shocking! The surreal worlds of Elsa Schiaparelli’ a major retrospective at The Musée des Arts Décoratifs until 22 January 2023 that @simonmartin_art has posted excellent examples from in his recent visit - worth viewing. Second: the great Virginia Dwan patron to land art most notably Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty and gallerist in both LA and NY who just passed away 5 September in my birthday month. A complete inspiration who supported and introduced many minimalist and land artists to the world including Michael Heizer in the 60’s and 70’s. Exceptional. Third: Jean-Luc Godard filmmaker extraordinaire who also just passed away recently on 13 September, again in my birthday month.
