The last 48 hours were so scary! On Monday night Jake noticed that Atlas wasn’t acting like his normal happy self. He was fussy, he didn’t want to be put down, he didn’t want to sleep and wasn’t interested in food. We checked his temperature and that was normal so we were stumped. Finally after a few hours of trying to comfort him, unable to identify any real symptoms, he threw up, a lot. I noticed that the breast milk he threw up did not appear to be digested, which was odd because it had been nearly 5 hours since his last bottle. We acted quickly and got him the car and started the hour drive to the children’s hospital in Atlanta. While waiting in the emergency room there, Atlas threw up a few more times, at first stomach bile and eventually blood. They rushed us back to a room and determined that his hernia had become incarcerated and would require emergency surgery. We always knew he would need hernia repair surgery and had planned to do it in September but once again Atlas had other plans. Yesterday, around 2pm Atlas went into surgery, A typical infant hernia surgery takes about 30 minutes but after 3 hours he was still in the OR. We were so incredibly worried. Around 5:30pm Atlas was brought back to us in the room. The surgery was a success and Atlas was stable. The surgery took so long because he had intestines stuck in two different areas that they had to address. It wasn’t a typical infant hernia repair, apparently nothing about our little guy is typical. It was a very intense few days for our family but I am so grateful and happy to be back home with my boys. Atlas is beyond strong and brave and his dad is the rock that keeps us all grounded when times get rough. I love my little family so much. Special thanks to the incredibly team at CHOA.
