Have you ever noticed a horse's skin twitching like this?
This is called the "Fly Twitch Response". It's how horses get pesky flies to leave them alone, especially during the warmer months of the year. They have a thin layer of fast-twitch muscle just below their skin called the Panniculus Carnosus Muscle. It's not 100% effective though, so if your horse is experiencing irritation from flies, you should help them out with some fly spray and/or a fly mask to protect their eyes!
Fun fact, this subcutaneous, fast-twitch muscle structure is also what allows humans to create facial expressions!
