Jackson, Mississippi is facing a water crisis, with little to no sanitary and running water in the foreseeable future. This crisis didn’t happen by circumstance; Jackson has lacked access to safe water for decades and leadership has not responded with accountability. Today, many communities are left without one of life's fundamental necessities.
Instead of funding Jackson—whose population is 82% Black, with many living below the poverty line—the State poured money into developing white cities. This disinvestment led to crippling infrastructure, failure to replace lead pipes, and fragile water systems. As someone who has family in Jackson, it’s heartbreaking and makes me angry. This is unacceptable. State government needs to act to protect its people.
I’m grateful for grassroots organizations on the ground who are providing support. The Mississippi Rapid Response Coalition is made of 30 Mississippi-based organizations and is working to meet the clean water needs of the communities that are impacted by the deteriorating infrastructure in Jackson, MS. Please support how you can and spread the word—the goal is to raise two million dollars to purchase and transport water, purchase reusable water containers, water filters, and other items needed.
