LA DISPUTE “NO ONE WAS DRIVING THE CAR” is out. What a record to work on. Intense, sprawling, real. The band tracked at The Grove in Australia, then sent over beautiful tracks with loads of mic choices. While I worked through the songs we had lots of Brisbane/Oakland/Grand Rapids conversations. Many phone calls and probably 40 pages of notes, sorting out details together. As we worked through the songs it became clear that studio tricks only called attention to themselves, so I finally realized we didn’t need any of that and went room mics only for ambience on everything - no artifical reverb - and as light a touch as I could manage. Automation is your friend. Loved working on this record, loved working closely with Brad and Chad, love where we ended up.
