Throwback to co-curating the Los Angeles presentation of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s Obama Portraits. There are *two complete, official collections of Presidential portraits: one at the Smithsonian and one at the White House. The White House Obama portraits will finally be unveiled with a ceremony hosted by President Biden this Wednesday, September 7th. I am also excited to share that the Smithsonian ChannelTM will premiere “Picturing the Obamas" on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. CT. Two 45-minute episodes will play back-to-back: the first called "Portraits of Hope" and the second called "Portraits of Change." Starting on September 11, both episodes will be available to stream on the Smithsonian Channel website and apps. The new documentary provides first-hand accounts from the artists, museum curators, fans, and the president himself about the ways in which President Barack and Mrs. Michelle Obama’s portraits for the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery disrupt traditional presidential portraiture. With exclusive access, "Picturing the Obamas" follows the acclaimed portraits by artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald on their national tour, which included stops in Chicago, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Houston, and examines the legacy of the first Black president and first lady as told through their likenesses. The special will follow the unveiling of the Obamas’ presidential portraits for the White House on Sept. 7. @smithsonian_channel #picturingtheobamas #obamaportraitstour
