Ocean showed up for his School, his teachers, his classmates and our entire Inglewood community today. Most importantly he showed up for himself and I’m proud of him. He knows he deserves better and he wants better for all the kids that live in our neighborhood. The county is closing the last public school in our home ZIP Code in Inglewood because of low enrollment. But the reason why enrollment is low is because our community’s schools were NEVER invested in... our neighborhood is full of kids. We need help from all of you, to show up in whatever way you can to help us stop The Warren Lane Elementary school closure. We need to get it out of conservatorship. Public school closures are a state wide problem. Only 5.2% of Californias public school student population is black, but over 60% of school closures are in black and brown neighborhoods. If California’s budget has a $68 billion surplus why can’t we invest in our children? Why can’t we invest that money in our public schools? The answer is that we can and no public school should be closing. Student to teacher ratio‘s should be dropping and more programs to support teachers, children and parents should be put in place. We really need everyone to pay attention and to start writing to the governor and senators and mayors and other elected officials. Change starts at the local level. Find out who your representatives are and send them a quick email, vocalizing that it’s important to you that we Stop closing public schools, we want to invest in our children. They deserve better. The city is renting out school properties to private charters to pay back city loans, so they have a vested interest in public schools closing in high market value real estate areas an Inglewood. Spread the word spread awareness and help us get some of California’s budget surplus back to our communities and our children. Inglewood home owners pay some of the highest property taxes... we should have some of the best schools in Inglewood! We want change and we want it now!
