“Art has always been a part of my life,” photographer Lella Soper (@lella.soper) explains. The daughter of touring car and motorsport legend Steve Soper, Lella’s work encompasses a sense of wanderlust and an intimate subversion on the often leering ‘women and cars’ trope; “It’s not a conscious narrative, I’ve always been lucky enough to have the freedom to travel and be around exciting people.”
Her photographic style is still transient in some way, ever-shifting; “Who knows where it will take me, next year my style of photography could be completely different. I find myself always experimenting and that is what makes me an artist.”
In no small way, her work, and this series in particular that we see above, was born in her upbringing around motorsport; “Before I could walk I was crawling around the race pits. I find something very thrilling about the smell of petrol and loud revs - I suppose I’m a petrolhead myself. For this project I wanted to connect beauty and freedom. Being in a car has always given me this pleasure.
Cars can often resonate as being masculine equipment and I never wanted this shoot to represent that. This is about the connection between woman and car, the traveler and wanderer.”
