Sagala and Tamiyoi take their nannying duties very seriously. Not only do they escort Juni every step to her bottle — but if you look closely, you’ll see that even as Tamiyoi enjoys her milk, she keeps one eye fixed on the little girl! This year’s drought left a tragic number of orphaned elephants in its wake. Many older rescues from the southern sector of Tsavo East went directly to our nearby Voi Reintegration Unit — much to the delight of everyone there. While Mbegu is the undisputed matriarch, her girlfriends seize every opportunity to look after the new rescues. Sagala and Tamiyoi are particularly keen. Juni is one of our new arrivals.
