According to Buddha’s teachings, three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth. Everything about my movement practice is about honoring nature to build an honest relationship with the body.
My close friend and mentor @drhabibsadeghi once said that whatever affects the mind affects the body, therefore if healing is to be complete and lasting, the mind and body must be treated together. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Habib Sadeghi found that many patients with severe health conditions also happen to be dishonest with themselves. Whether it’s repressing trauma, denying your sexuality, or not embracing your unique self, these cancerous feelings can manifest physically in the body. The reality is that living your truth is essential to full-body wellness.
For me, exercise has always been a truth-affirming act. In many indigenous peoples’ cultures, movement was an agent of healing: primal dances were performed to invoke rain, health, food abundance, and other divine blessings. They used their bodies to process the world around them. Movement is an ancient human ritual that we have used throughout history to process suffering, to reconnect with nature, and to feel most alive. Today, so many of us have been denatured by our lifestyles, and approach movement as a rigid daily chore. In reality, it’s not about proper form or hitting a certain amount of reps–it’s about listening to your body, embracing your truth, and using movement as a force to unite and strengthen the mind, body, and soul.
