Pharaoh Sanders for life. My parents love to tell the story that while my mother was pregnant with me, they went to hear Pharoah. In the womb, I was dancing with the Pharoah’s band. Years later I would get to tell Pharoah this story as we ran into each other over and over on the road. I remember seeing Pharoah strolling across Central Park, his white beard like a guiding light cutting through the greenery. I followed him down to the Vanguard and heard him transfer the basement into a resonating singing bowl. He always knew where the power lay.
