The sense of possibility walking out onto an empty stage. Being part of a company. The way it can hold you, whatever you're feeling that day. The way it can lift you. Connect you. Challenge you. Make you discover parts of yourself you never knew existed. I signed up for this life to be part of the magical community of Showpeople. I’ve spent years treading the boards in the chorus, understudying, doing regional productions. And Broadway? Let me tell you: the size or zip code of a theater is not the prize. The prize is doing the thing itself. Some of my favorite theatrical experiences happened in those tucked-away regional houses. Brief, wondrous moments and then they were gone, only to be remembered by a lucky few. For years, I went to every ECC and EPA I was right for. Waited on those lines to sing my 16 bars, even though the role was probably already cast. And theatre school. So much theatre school! Like all actors, I’ve faced immeasurable rejections. If I had a nickel for every time I didn’t get the gig... Hell, if I had a nickel for every time I couldn’t even get an AUDITION for the gig... But that’s much of the job: patience, self-care, hard work, and optimism while you wait out your dry spell until, hopefully, you book the next one. So, now that I get to be Fanny Brice on Broadway for 5 weeks and suddenly find myself in this club which includes @beaniefeldstein, Mimi Hines, and the LEGEND @barbrastreisand... To me, this is a moment to celebrate all the folks out there sweating off their lil tuchuses in summer stock for EMC points, or trying to nail down their partner to rehearse for scene study, or filming their gazillionth EPA self-tape wondering if anybody is ever even going to see it... sometimes, all that work aligns in surprising ways, and you get to do the thing you love most in the world on a scale you hadn’t really imagined.
