Most days of lockdown I sat at my computer and zoomed with @olilyttelton and @temi.wilkey and @louise.nesbitt and @lillyburns and @edstambo and Toby Bruce - none of whom I’d ever met (actually I’d met Temi a few years earlier but she had no memory of it) and we talked about this show.
Oli (incredible writer, impossibly lovely) had already written the first episode and made most of the characters up. And together we’d figure out the rest.
We met on zoom and we plotted out the series on zoom and we got notes on all our scripts over zoom and we found out Disney had greenlit the show over zoom and I STILL hadn’t met any of these people and sort of thought maybe they didn’t exist (except possibly Temi) and that my laptop was running some rogue program just doing its best to keep me busy in between the Thursday claps.
Every day we’d log on and squander the first hour becoming better friends before making up some more cool stuff to happen in a show that might not get filmed.
I’m finding it deeply weird that it did. And that all the stuff we made up, chatting into our laptops at the height of lockdown, was then cast and acted and directed and edited and people found all the locations and made them look cool and put some (really great) music under the thing and today it’s arrived on other people’s laptops. And tellies if you’re like a billion years old. I’m just describing making any show, but for obvious reasons it all felt especially strange with this one and everyone’s individual contributions seemed to arrive like miracles.
I was incredibly lucky to get this exact job at that specific time. I don’t know that I could’ve coped without it.
So thanks Oli and Lilly and Toby for that! And thanks Ed and Temi and Louise for being my new friends and very funny and good! And everyone else for whatever they did (Covid meant I only made it to set once, but you all looked busy and talented).
I think the show’s great and bet you’ll like it!
N.B. Disney+ also features companion shows Obi Wan Kenobi and Cars: On The Road. To make FULL sense of wedding season you MUST watch these shows first. But you can understand almost 50% of it without seeing either. #weddingseasonseries
