After being at @theportraitmasters I realized that there needs to be work done at the educator level when it comes to shifting the culture around bodies in the photography industry.
The Portrait Masters is just an example because it's recent but every photography conference I attend or teach at, it is pretty much the same - for every 1 plus size model there are 20+ straight size models.
While all humans are beautiful, if the only time plus size bodies enter the photography/model conversation it's only in regards to being body positive, it's not changing the culture. It's just reinforcing the idea that folks that live in large bodies owe education on their lived experiences instead of just being allowed to model.
What I would love to see, is photography educators stepping up and start to confront their body image beliefs and biases because together is how we shift the narrative. What we teach trickles down to the new photographers.
So, what I've done is compiled a list of questions for photography educators to get curious about their processes. This isn't a blame game and these questions I propose over the next little while are simply to encourage you to look and see where your body image/the way you feel about bodies might be impacting your educational content. Just get curious!
If you feel defensive - that means there's probably something to it. It's like a little beacon telling you that there might be something there to investigate.
At the very least, just ask yourself the question - for me, I uncovered that I tend to show/create tutorials with bodies within my own age range instead of older bodies or bodies with disabilities even if the tutorial is about lighting, editing, etc. - so this is something I need to shift!
It takes all of us continually asking questions, but we have an immense power to truly shift the way people see themselves, including ourselves.
My hope is that by 2024 more folks are using a variety of folks in their photography educational content.
First question:
Do you find that you use similar models for your workshops/shootouts?
Do those models tend to look like most photographer's clients?
