Today we announced that work has begun on new bus-priority lanes along Northern Blvd in Queens We also announced that busway pilots installed in 2021 along 181st St in Manhattan’s Washington Heights, & along Jamaica & Archer Aves in Queens will become permanent.
“We are working every day to achieve Mayor Eric Adams's commitment to deliver an unprecedented number of bus lanes. The changes to Northern Blvd will not only make bus service faster for thousands of riders, but they will also help us make this street much safer.” -Commissioner Rodriguez
The Northern Blvd bus-priority project will deliver 4.6 miles of bus lanes from Woodside to Corona. The affected bus routes – Q66, QM2, QM3, QM20, and QM32 – also connect to the M, R, and 7 subway lines with 17,000 weekday riders.
The five bus routes along 181st St serve 68,000 weekday passengers, where bus riders comprise 62% - 72% of roadway users. Pre-busway average speeds were 3.7 miles per hour. After implementing the busway, speeds improved up to 32%.
The 26 unique bus routes on Jamaica Ave and Archer Ave connect to three subway lines & the LIRR. Buses on Jamaica Ave previously had average speeds of 4.7 to 4.9 MPH. Following implementation of the busway, bus speeds along Jamaica Ave increased up to 34%.
The busways will be enforced by NYPD & NYC DOT & MTA automated enforcement cameras (currently activated on all corridors). Now permanent, Archer Ave’s busway will remain in effect 24/7. Jamaica Ave’s and 181st St's busways will operate between 6AM-8PM, seven days a week.
