Back in 2012, I didn’t get my act together to send in my ballot on time for the US general election. At the time I tried to brush it off and convince myself it didn’t matter.. It’s just one vote, Virginia went democrat anyway, and so on.. but eight years later I still feel bad about it. Here’s why: 1. It’s hard to fathom how lucky we are to be in a time & place where most people can vote. That’s been the case for such a small number of people ever, and it came at such a huge cost. A president talking about contesting the election results isn’t an early warning sign that this could change, it’s a late warning sign. 2. Even though we have a vote, there aren’t that many times that we get to collectively decide where things should go, and what really matters to us. Are we going to fight social inequality and eradicate racism? Are we going to do something meaningful about climate change? Do we believe healthcare is a basic human right, and should we help the millions of people in America living in poverty? We make a choice about all those things by turning up to vote.. and I think that’s one of the most important things we can do. 3. Voting isn’t hard. We just gotta go do it. Even when the choice doesn’t look good, we can still take a step in the right direction. Anyway. Don’t be me in 2012. If you’ve got a vote, get your ass to the polling station and use it. Peace and love ✌️💕 #vote2020 @whenweallvote
