Melia and baby Milo had a spot of drama this afternoon. After enjoying a refreshing dip, Milo found himself stuck in the Ithumba pool. The Keepers wondered how Melia, as a first-time mum, would handle the situation and were on standby to offer support. In fact, Melia soon had a whole team at her disposal — it wasn’t long before word got out and several of her friends materialised from the bush. (That’s a wild elephant being driven away, just so the Keepers could safely assist if needed)
As it turned out, Melia didn’t need any help at all! She shepherded Milo over to a gentler slope, where he was able to clamber out with a prod from mum. In no time, the little calf was back on firm ground and had put the entire incident behind him.
We are so proud of how calmly and adeptly Melia handled this situation. Seeing what a proficient first-time mother she is, it’s easy to forget that she is an orphan raised by the human hand. Elephants like Melia, who are now living wild and raising their own families, are the greatest testament of the success of our Orphans’ Project. Thank you for making their stories possible.
