"Carlos Alfonzo: Late Paintings," explores the Cuban artist's final series before his untimely death in 1991 from AIDS-related complications.⁣ ⁣ Alfonzo's work combined expressionist painting with references to Cuban Santería and other religious practices. Although much of his work involved colorful and dynamic compositions, Alfonzo's color palette became much darker and somber later in his life.⁣ ⁣ “Blood” (1990) is the artist’s last painting. The impressively scaled work reveals a renewed energy—floating heads, blood platelets, geometric forms and erratic lines fill the canvas.⁣ On view through November 27.
