I spent the last couple weeks studying the “sacred and secular spaces” of Europe. Our main focus was extravagant cathedrals and incredible historic sights & while they were a sight to behold, I found one thing to be true while running around some new places... People are a sacred space. From high-fiving strangers from all sorts of different countries & broken-language-bus conversations in Pisa; to laughing and joking & singing how great thou art in a Tuscan vineyard in the middle of the night with 15 Italians, looking up at the sky for the northern lights, praising God in 3 different languages. From following a wise man around his vineyard who believes the languages we speak are not our real language, but placed on us, and our real “heart language” is love; to listening as his wife brings us the most delicious food and tells us that our soul purpose here is to give freely and generously ourselves and our belongings. From singing “sweet home Alabama” with 200 strangers and dancing to “Bella ciao” on top of a hill in Florence, to staying up until the wee hours of the morning to have time just to be and talk with one another. People are so beautiful. So holy. Little snapshots and images of the Creator. Of life to the full and beauty and wonder and joy and kindness and love and generosity. What a sweet thing it is to be human! What a special thing it is for us all to be in this together.
