Have you met Maxwell, our Nairobi Nursery’s resident rhino?
This #SWTTransformationTuesday, discover his story.
RESCUE: February 6, 2007 started off rather ordinarily, with the Keepers leading the Nursery herd out into Nairobi National Park for the day. Things took a turn when they spotted a yearling rhino, wandering alone and clearly in distress. We suspected he was blind based on his opaque eyes, a fact that was confirmed once we got him back to the stockades. The next month, Kenya’s leading eye specialist performed surgery on Maxwell’s eyes (hence the patch), but unfortunately it transpired that he could never regain his sight due to a congenital degenerating condition.
RECOVERY: As Maxwell continued to get larger, so did his space — we had to keep expanding his stockade to accommodate the growing rhino! He very quickly got the lay of the land, so much so that one could be forgiven for forgetting he is blind when watching him navigate his home.
TODAY: Although Maxwell is the only rhino in our permanent care at the Nairobi Nursery, he is never wanting for company. He is surrounded by a coterie of warthogs (much to his chagrin) and frequently interacts with the orphaned elephants, who more often than not are trying to steal some of his extra lucerne!
Because of his blindness, Maxwell will always call our Nairobi Nursery home — but the 16-year-old leads a very full life here. The recent rains have put him in an especially good mood; he’s been celebrating by frolicking around his stockade and flinging mud in every direction.
