Hervé Télémaque (1937-2022) is considered one of the preeminent painters of the postwar period and has been at the forefront of multiple avant-garde movements. With an artistic output that spans from grotesque figuration to Pop art to assemblage, let's take a look at one of the earliest works in Télémaque's oeuvre. Moving from his native country of Haiti to New York City in 1957. Télémaque’s abstract composition addressed the anxieties that plagued his day to day life in a new city. These anxieties would become fundamental themes that his work would revolve around. In paintings like “Quand j’appris la nouvelle (When I Heard the News),” (1960) Télémaque’s inclination toward abstraction is challenged by the need to include figurative elements, suggestive body parts, and intrusive eyes. “Hervé Télémaque: 1959-1964”, is on view now through April 30, 2023 on the ground floor of the museum.
